Prince of Novgorod (Holmgård). Born about 800 in Roslagen, Sweden. Died aound 879 in Novgorod, Russia. It is the name Rus' which together with other linguistic evidence and archeological findings make it possible to link these governors and their entourages to Swedes. The word is closely related to the Finnish name, Ruotsi, and has probably spread eastward from Finland. According to the Russian Primary Chroniclerepresentatives went to various tribes of the ocean to a varangian tribe called Rus' and said to them: 'Our country is great and fruitful, but there is no order. Come and reign over us!'. It was determined that the three brothers from Rus would come with his companions. The eldest of them, Rurik, first settled down in the town of Ladoga and later in Novgorod. Ruriks’ two brothers died after a few years, so Rurik took control of those areas. He came from Novgorod to rule over large parts of northwest Russia. Rurik built according to tradition his fortress in a place called Gorodisce 'the old castle' close to Volkhov south of Novgorod. Death probably in 879. Legendary ruler Viking chieftain and varangian Prince who is considered the founder of Russia and the PRINCELY HOUSE who ruled the country til 1598. The Russian Primary Chronicle claims that divided East Slavic tribes in the Kiev Russian Empire during the 800’s sent for Rurik and his men to unite the country. Prince Oleg
Prince Oleg, Oleg the Wise, the Norse male name "Helgi". When Rurik (Rörik) died in 879, his son Igor (Ingvar) is not yet an adult, so a relative named Oleg (Helgi) was appointed regent in Novgorod Kingdom. According to the Chronicle, Oleg had the title of Grand Duke.
The Russian state has its origin in the principality of Kievan Rus' that was created by the Swedish Vikings (Rus). Beginning in 1019, the country was split through the succession of divisions of several principalities although regent Kiev (from 1169 in Vladimir- Suzdal and from 1328 in Moscow) had with the title of Grand Duke a formal sovereignty over Russia.
Mongol warriors
The internal divisions meant that Russia was conquered by the Mongols in 1240 and turned into a mongolkhan vassal state. First in 1480 Russia liberated from the Mongols under the leadership of Ivan the Great who at the same time united Russia.
Ivan the Terrible
Ivan the Terrible assumed the title Czar (Russian word for Caesar) in 1547.
